Tours

St Jean-de-Luz

Discover the Basque coast from Biarritz to the breath-taking Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao. 3* hotel, gourmet basque dinner and hire car included.St Jean-de-Luz

St Jean de Luz is the smallest and most refined of the three Basque coastal resorts: Biarritz and San Sebastien tending to be flashier and noisier. St Jean is a modest but chic resort, where turn-of-the-century townhouses line the unspoilt seafront rather than impetuous highrises.
From this base you can explore the whole of the basque coast with your rental car as well as the inland foothills of the Pyrenees. A motorway link makes it possible to visit the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao in the morning before coming back slowly along the coast. The region abounds with tiny fishing villages and seafood restaurants.

Our suggested programme:

Day 1: arrival Biarritz airport. Pick up hire car before discovering Biarritz and getting that unmistakable whiff of the belle époque when the crowned heads of Europe were elbowing each other to be seen promenading in Marienbad or Biarritz.

Much has changed in the past century but the Atlantic still throws itself at the Biarritz promenade, Casino and waterfront much as it did at the end of the 19th century. Just sit at a café terrace over-looking the 'grand plage' watching the beautiful people, the surfers and the ocean. You won't want to leave.

On to St Jean de Luz, 20 minutes down the rugged coast. Settle into your hotel and take a stroll through St Jean before going back to the hotel for a 'welcome aperitif' and a gourmet basque dinner, wine included. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2: after breakfast you can either set off for Bilbao guggenheim museumand the Guggenheim or just laze around the hotel and play a few holes of golf. Bilbao is 70 minutes or so by motorway .. and well worth the drive. Once over the border at Hendaye/Irun you head for Spain's equivalent of Biarritz, San Sébastien before reaching Bilbao.
If in a sporting mood you could try your hand at surfing on the Guetary beach, a few miles from the hotel, where the breakers will astonish by their height and strength.
For golfers, there'a three practice holes (par 3) in the hotel grounds and a number of excellent courses in the vicinity: the hotel will advise.
Overnight in hotel

Day 3: depending on flight times you should have ample time for a run along the beach and some shopping in St Jean before returning to the airport.

Hotel 3*, a cliff-top luxury hotel over-looking the bay of St Jean-de-Luz.
Rooms have balcony, TV and bathroom, the hotel grounds comprise 9 acres of gardens with pool, sauna, 3-hole golf course. The gourmet restaurant offers a choice of regional dishes with a large range of seafood.
