Carcassonne is a 13th century walled citadel set among the Corbières vineyards between the Massif Central and the foothills of the Pyrenees. It's just 30 mins from the Mediterranean beaches and 90 from the ski slopes.

But there's plenty to do and see without moving far: the citadel itself - a UNESCO heritage site - is full of twisty cobbled lanes, ramparts, turrets, towers and dungeons. Flowing through the town is another UNESCO site, the Canal du Midi, a stunning 17th century engineering feat giving Atlantic shipping access to the Mediterranean.

Our golf package in Carcassonne is based in a 4* chateau on the regions best golf course, the Domaine d'Auriac, just a few hundred metres south of the citadels' walls.

Two restaurants: Philippe Ducos, chef cuisinier, presides over the main restaurant which serves original and traditional dishes either on the terrace facing the links or, in winter, in the high-ceilinged dining-room complete with roaring log fire.

The "Bistrot d'Auriac" serves meals, snacks and drinks at green 19.
