ST LARY is one of the top Pyrenean resorts as it combines good skiing, white water sports and hiking with an authentic and lively village. Access from the UK is fast and simple: 90 minutes from the airports of Pau or Toulouse which are only 2 hours from London, Dublin, Bristol and Manchester.
Our white water sports programme is available in spring and autumn with the emphasis on white water sports rather than snow sports.
The snow-fed rivers running off the Pyrenees lend themselves particularly well to all white water activities. Rafting is a fairly special exercise as it involves a lot of teamwork and coordination to succeed. Eight people in a rubber raft each equipped with a short paddle won't get far unless they're working and thinking together. But with our helmsman/instructor teaching the rudiments of the trade the group should be pulling together by the end of the day.
These same rivers often pass through narrow high-sided canyons higher up in the mountains. The group descends a section of the canyon – using natural water slides, rappels, swimming and jumping into deep pools. Again, a qualified instructor accompanies and guides the group who must work together to overcome the various difficulties.
Both these activities involve a certain amount of specialized equipment – helmets, wetsuits, ropes, etc – all of which are provided.
The third activity – on dry land this time – is arapaho, or downhill scooter racing. Large over-sized scooters are used to 'ski' down the slopes when the snow has gone, attaining frightening speeds on the steep grassy gradients. A couple of ski lifts continue to function to take the scooter-addicts back up to the top.
Again, a three night programme is advisable here: two days of activities - morning rafting followed by afternoon arapaho and a morning canyoning followed by relaxation in the Spa – in the same beautiful setting of St Lary. 3* hotel and restaurant/auberge evenings included.
