CARCASSONNE is famous for its XIIIth century citadel, the largest in Europe, which dominates the wide valley between the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. It's also the spot where Atlantic influence gives way to Mediterranean, where the vine becomes the dominant vegetation and where movements of peoples over the centuries have left exciting cultural landmarks from forbidding castles to state-of-the-art canals.
The main assets of Carcassonne for this type of programme are:
* easy access from airport to city-centre/hotel (10 minutes)
daily 2-hour plane link to UK/Ireland
* wealth of wines and wine-tasting opportunities (5 AOC wines in area)
* plenty to see or do within walking distance
Our French Cuisine and rallying programme concentrates on the luxury side to French living: accommodation is in a 4* chateau (there are no 5* hotels in France) - not far from the Citadel – with its own 18-hole golf course.
The three day programme includes two gourmet dinners in fine restaurants, a wine-tasting session at a wine chateau as well as a visit to a vast, underground cavern.
The two highlights of the break have a competitive aspect which can be adapted to the aims of the group: a rally through the neighbouring Montagne Noire in old Citroën 2CVs, over farm lanes, past Cathar castles, through vineyards and sunflower fields to end in a wine estate.
The second event is a cooking class by a top chef preceded by a visit to the local market where participants are given a limited amount of money with which to buy ingredients for their lunch: the winners are those who have planned their purchasing well AND applied their culinary skills.
This is a fairly intensive three-day programme with more than one activity scheduled per day: extra days are always possible with a range of extra activities to fill them:
* golf (in the hotel grounds)
* other wine-tasting venues (local AOC vineyards include Minervois, Cabardès, Corbières, Limoux and Malapère)
* cruise on the 17th century Canal du Midi
