Toulouse Hi-Tech - Airbus A380
Type of programme : corporate incentive/reward
Duration: 3 nights – four days
Accommodation: 3* hotel
Access: Toulouse airport (direct flights from most UK and Irish airports)
This is a high-tech tour which is very popular with engineers of all stripes as it takes participants into the heart of the Airbus construction plant at Toulouse, right on to the A380 assembly line before whisking them out to the French countryside for an inspection of Norman Foster's architectural masterpiece – the viaduct of Millau.
As an historical extra, the tour stops in Albi where the group can examine the largest brick building in the world – the XIIth century Sainte Cécile cathedral.
Base for this programme is Toulouse, a surprising mix of expanding modern city where aerospace industries and top universities attract recruits from all over Europe and an old mediaeval core where ancient renaissance history and wealth sit sedately beside the Garonne river. The hotel is a comfortable 3* in the city centre, a mere stroll from the leafy boulevards and squares, cafés and restaurants, cloisters and Romanesque churches of this, the 'Pink City'.
The programme begins even before participants touch down in Toulouse airport as this is also the home of Airbus Industries who use the same runways to test their planes off the assembly line. With any luck you'll see rows of A320's, the odd A340 and maybe even an A380 as you taxi in. A couple of old Concordes complete the panorama.
The second day is devoted to Airbus – the assembly-line visit at the new Lagardère hangar, a tour of the site and a nostalgic glance at the original Concorde.
The third day includes a drive through the beautiful southern Massif Central to Millau where participants can examine Lord Foster's viaduct from every angle in the company of a local english-speaking guide. The return trip is by way of Albi where a short stop gives the group time to admire the pink brick edifice, its painted interior and the adjacent Toulouse-Lautrec museum.
Optional extras are a night in Millau with a special visit to the underground Roquefort caverns where the famous cheese is matured, vineyard visit with wine-tasting, a look at the origins of French aviation in a special Toulouse air museum, a visit to the 'Cite de l'Espace' and a view 'backstage' of Toulouse airport.
