The abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou sits perched up on a shelf at about 1.090 meters of altitude, just above the village of Casteil. It was around 1000 AD that Guifred II, Count of Cerdagne and Conflent, decided to build the abbey and house a community of Benedictine monks. The abbey was lived in by the monks until the end of the 18th century.
