Armagnac is located in the heart of Gascony, south east of Bordeaux (about 130kms).It is where the oldest wine based eau-de-vie in France is produced. It is produced by a single distillation of white wine in an Armagnac alambic and then left to age for many years in oak barrels before being bottled and sold.
The Armagnac brandy is distilled from a range of ten grapes, the most common being Folle Blanche, Bacco 22a, Colombard and Ugni Blanc and has more flavor and taste compared to Cognac. It also provides the basis for local aperitifs: Floc de Gascogne and Pousse Rapierrre.
Pick up in Bordeaux and departure for the Bas Armagnac.
Arriving at Domaine d’Ognoas, a remarkable and classy site, which stretches out over 565 hectares around Arthez-d’Armagnac, the estate owns the oldest distillery in Gascony. We know that production and distillation started in Ognoas in 1780 and has continued since.
Enjoy a distillery visit and an Armagnac tasting session.
Then drive to Labastide d’Armagnac, a village erected in 1291. Nestled in the heart of the Bas Armagnac, this little village has kept it’s medieval charm and authenticity. Discover the “place Royale” particularly well preserved, half timbered houses and the church with an embattled church tower.
Lunch at leisure.
In the afternoon, you will enjoy a distillery visit and an Armagnac tasting session in a small estate. Discover the secrets of Armagnac, from the distillation process to the different local aperitifs that were, in the past, consumed for their therapeutic benefits!
Drive back to Bordeaux & overnight at the hotel.
