Day 6 : Pic du Midi

Spend your first day in the Pyrenees exploring an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Pic du Midi is at 2877m altitude. From the terrace we can see for over 300 km from the summits and peaks of the Pyrenean range to the vineyards of the South-West. The splendour of these landscapes has earned the Pic du Midi to be classified as a national site of outstanding natural beauty.

Day 7 : Cirque de Gavarnie

This crowning glory of the entire Pyrenees ranks as one of Europe’s most magnificent natural spectacles. It is an inspiring glacial amphitheatre rising 1400m from its base and stretching in a near perfect semi-circle for 890m in diameter. A UNESCO world heritage site, the cirque is a natural amphitheatre of towering cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. A lovely drive up the steep-sided valley of the Gave de Gavarnie will take you to the small village of Gavarnie. Start the day with a steep but steady climb through thin woodland towards the Plateau de Pailla. From here follow a lovely path that traverses through the woods above the valley floor. At 1570m meet the main path at the centre of the cirque, now completely surrounded by towering 1000m high cliffs. From here there is an optional climb (a further 200m ascent) to the foot of the Grande Cascade – a spectacular 400m waterfall. Complete the circuit with an easy descent to Gavarnie village along the open valley floor.
